Innovative Faith-Based Outreach

The consortium for Elder Abuse Prevention Program at the Institute on Aging (IOA) of San Francisco, a former partner and now consultant to the National Center on Elder Abuse, has just launched a national initiative to share ideas on involving and creating relationships with communities of faith. In San Francisco, faith congregations have always been part of the IOA’s outreach efforts. At the beginning of 2003, however, the IOA began to target this group due to a change in California law ( AB:255 ) that legally required all clergy in the state to report elder/dependant adult abuse. With funding from the National Center on Elder Abuse, the efforts in San Francisco included: partnering with the city’s Inter-Faith Council to create a database of all faith congregations in the city; sending a notice of the new mandated reporting law to each of these congregations; offering a free training seminar on elder/dependent adult abuse for all clergy; working collaboratively with the Department of Public Health’s violence prevention project to reach African American clergy; and providing training to individual congregations when invited. The IOA staff learned some valuable lessons, through their successes and failures, about working with the faith community (Twomey, 2004, p. 2). Among the initiatives is a curriculum to train clergy on elder abuse, which will be posted on the National Center on Elder Abuse Website and will be available for the elder abuse prevention community. IOA also hosted two national teleconferences for state and area agencies on aging and adult protective services personnel to share experiences and successful partnerships with faith communities.
